Update to 2012 Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals -- 14-MAY-2012

The payroll tax cut has been extended for all of 2012. If you downloaded 2012 Form 1040-ES before May 19, 2012, please note the following two changes:

  1. On page 2, the section formerly called Payroll tax has been renamed Social security and Medicare tax for 2012, and should now read:

“The employee tax rate for social security is 4.2%.  The social security wage base limit is $110,100.  The Medicare tax rate is 1.45%.  There is no wage base limit for Medicare tax.

The tax rate for net earnings from self-employment is 10.4%, up to the social security wage base limit of $110,100.”

  2. On page 5, the 2012 Self-Employment Tax and Deduction Worksheet for Lines 1 and 11 of the Estimated Tax Worksheet has been revised so that lines 6, 9, 11, 12, and 13 are the same as these lines on the 2011 Self-Employment Tax and Deduction Worksheet for Lines 1 and 11 of the Estimated Tax Worksheet.

A revised version of 2012 Form 1040-ES is now available for download.
