March 7, 2012: Fraudulent IRS e-file Acceptance Letters
The IRS has become aware of efforts to deceive IRS e-file Software Developers and Transmitters through the use of false Authorized IRS e-file Provider acceptance letters to obtain software and e-file fraudulent returns.
These false acceptance letters display valid Electronic Filing Identification Numbers (EFINs) but the names and addresses of the tax preparation firms are fraudulent. They are not Authorized IRS e-file Providers.
Software Developers and Transmitters must ensure they are transmitting only for Authorized IRS e-file Providers. To ascertain you are performing e-file activities only for other Authorized IRS e-file Providers, you may request they provide a copy of an acceptance letter issued within the last year or a copy of the summary page of their IRS e-file Application. The summary page will show the entity, Principals, Responsible Officials, the EFIN and if the EFIN is active. You may also confirm EROs by searching the ERO Locator on IRS.gov for EROs who chose to be listed there.
