The Form 8938 naming convention provided by the IRS contains a minor revision.

We are removing the space between the form and number. Please ensure that tax preparers and online filers adhere to the following guidance for the remainder of the 2012 filing season:

Form 8938:  Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets

When including Form 8938 as a binary attachment (PDF) on an electronically filed return, the following naming convention must be used:

  1. The file name must be Form8938.pdf
  2. The first 8 characters of the Description must be Form8938 for the Binary Attachment XML Document
  3. Do not include a space between Form and 8938.  It must read Form8938
  4. Do not capitalize FORM.  It must be exact -  Form8938  (case sensitive)
The PDF naming guidance has been updated on the Modernized e-File (MeF)User Guides & Publications page.
