Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) - YouTube video text script
Hello, I’m David Williams and I’m leading the IRS Team implementing the new oversight regulations for tax return preparers.
As you may have heard, major changes are in store for anyone who is paid to prepare all or substantial all of any federal tax return or claim for refund. Please go to www.irs.gov/taxpros to read about these major changes.
Today, I’m going to focus on phase one of our efforts, the PTIN – the Preparer Tax Identification Number.
Starting January 1, 2011, the use of the PTIN will be required on all federal returns or claims for refund.
Even if you already have a PTIN, you must register using the new online application.
This new application is at IRS (DOT) gov (SLASH) taxpros. Look for the PTIN Sign-up System.
And, just follow these steps:
- Create an account
- Complete the PTIN application
- Pay the $64.25 fee
- Get your PTIN.
A PTIN will be assigned to you immediately after you pay your fee. If you already have a PTIN, you may retain the same number.
We know you’re busy and we have tried to keep the burden on you to a minimum. For the vast majority, this process should take only a few minutes. Remember, www – dot – i.r.s.-dot-gov (slash) taxpros.
Thank you and we look forward to working with you on these issues.
