How to Request a Copy Your Tax Return - YouTube video text script

Here's a tip from the IRS.

Hi, my name is Eric, and I work for the Internal Revenue Service.

You know, when you file your tax return, it's always a good idea to keep a copy for your records.

But what if you didn't do that, and now you need information from that return for some purpose?

Maybe you're applying for a student loan or perhaps a home mortgage.

Well, the good news is a tax return transcript may be just as good.

It's easy to get, and the good news is that it's absolutely free.

You can get it online, by phone or through the mail.

Just go to www.IRS.gov

and click on "Order a Tax Return or Account Transcript."

Then just follow the easy directions, or if you prefer, you can give us a call.

The toll-free number is 1-800-908-9946.

That's 1-800-908-9946.

Or you can make your request by mail.

Just fill out form 4506T-EZ and mail it to where the instructions tell you to.

A couple of notes here — you can get transcripts for the current year and the past three years.

But if you actually need a copy of your return, those are available for the current year and the past six years, as well.

But remember, it's gonna cost you $57 for each year you request.

But in most cases, all the information you need is on the tax return transcript, and that's easy to get, and it's absolutely free.

To find out more, just go to www.IRS.gov.
