Do I Have To File a Tax Return? (ASL) - YouTube video text script

Hi, I’m Patrick and I work for the IRS.

Every year, the IRS gets this question:

"Do I have to file a tax return?"

In most cases, it depends upon your filing status, your age, how much you make and what kind of income you receive such as wages, social security benefits, dividends, etc.

If you are single, for example, you usually need to file if you earn over $9,000.

Your situation may vary if you’re self-employed or a dependent that can be claimed on someone else's tax return.

But just because you don't have to file a tax return, doesn't mean you shouldn't.

If you had taxes withheld from your paycheck, you should file a tax return so that you can get a refund.

Also, you could be eligible for certain credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, which could mean an even bigger refund.
