Free File Fillable Forms Limitations

The “Do The Math” function
There are several lines including, tax, standard deductions, and certain credits on the tax return that will not calculate using the "Do the Math."

The "Do The Math" button only does mathematical calculations such as addition and subtraction but does not calculate taxes, or compute any other line item that might have limitations based on other items on the tax form.

Form 2441 – More than 2 Children
Unfortunately using the electronic version of Form 2441 you can not enter more than 2 children. The program is not capable of attaching additional forms or attachments to account for more than 2 providers. If your Adjusted Gross Income(AGI) is less than $57,000 you may use the traditional Free File program which is interview based and will allow you enter more than 2 children. If you do not qualify and you wish to file electronically you will have to use another software program.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused.

More than 4 Dependants
Currently, the Form 1040 has a space for 4 dependants, so there can be up to 6 exemptions (including taxpayer and spouse.) The Form 1040A has a space for 6 dependants, so there can be up to 8 exemptions (including taxpayer and spouse.)
If you want to continue with Free File Fillable Forms, you will need print and mail your return to the IRS. Include any additional names for your dependents on a separate worksheet.

If you want to e-file, you may want to consider other options for e-filing your federal return for free. You can select from the list of Free File companies at the IRS.gov website if your AGI is $57,000 or less. You may also access various online tax software websites and prepare and e-file your return for free. The IRS does not charge taxpayers to e-file their completed returns, but some tax preparers and software manufactures may charge a fee if certain criteria is not met.

Schedule B – Additional Accounts
At the current time we are unable to add an additional Schedule B.We are working on a solution to this issue. We can not accommodate more than 13 entries on Schedule B part 1 and 17 entries in part 2.

In order to file electronically, you will have to either use the traditional Free File program (if your AGI is $57,000 or less), another web based program or a home computer based software program.

Schedule B - Printing
Schedule B is only required if you have more than $1,500 in taxable interest or $1,500 in taxable ordinary dividends (not combined.) If you do not have more than the required amount, Schedule B is not required to be filed and will not print. If the amounts in either taxable interest or taxable ordinary dividends are above the threshold, after you click "Do the Math" and "Done with this form, Schedule B will both print and attach itself to the return.

Schedule C Losses
At the current time, if after clicking "Do the Math", the amount on Schedule C line 29 (tentative profit or loss) results in a loss, the loss will not carry down to line 31 and will not carry over to the Form 1040.

To fix this problem:

  1. Check the correct box on line 32a or 32b to show whether your investment is at risk.
  2. Enter the loss amount on line 31 as a negative amount.
  3. Click the "Do the Math" button
  4. Click the "Done With This Form" button

Your loss should now carry over to your Form 1040. If you have more than one Schedule C, be sure to follow the instructions for reporting a loss for any Schedule Cs that have a loss. The program will add the net profit or loss from all of the Schedule Cs and report them on Form 1040.

Schedule D – Too Many Transactions
At the current time the Free File Fillable Forms Schedule D will not handle more than the number of transactions that can be reported on the combined Schedules D/D-1 and will not handle any attachments. If you wish to file electronically you have several options. If your AGI is less than $57,000 you may use the traditional Free File Program. If your income does not meet the AGI requirement you may use another online or home computer based software program which will allow for additional transactions to be input.

If you are filing your own international federal tax return, go to the International Where to File Address for specific return type and guidance.
