Registered Tax Return Preparer Test Refunds

As of Friday, January 18, 2013, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia enjoined the Internal Revenue Service from requiring mandatory testing consistent with the regulatory requirements for registered tax return preparers and testing has been discontinued.

RTRP test refunds for candidates who were scheduled to take the RTRP test on or after January 18, 2013 will be automatically processed by the vendor. Candidates whose appointments were cancelled and who qualify for a refund will receive an email from the test vendor outlining the process.

1. Will I be notified if I am eligible for a refund? If so, how?

Yes. Candidates whose RTRP test appointments were scheduled on or after January 18, 2013, will receive an email outlining the refund process.

2. How much refund should I expect?

Candidates will receive $116 for each scheduled test appointment on or after January 18, 2013.

3. How will my fee be refunded?

Your test fee will be refunded to the credit or debit card account you used to pay for your test. If you paid for your test via e-check, you will receive a credit to your bank account. If we are unable to refund to your card or account, you will receive a refund check in the mail at the address you provided when scheduling your test.

4. When will I receive my refund?

Allow 60 days from the date of your email notification for the credit to post to your credit or debit card account.

5. Can I still take the RTRP test?

The RTRP test is not available. Please continue to check this website for additional information as it becomes available.
