Copies of Scanned EO Returns Available
Electronic copies (images) of certain Exempt Organization returns filed with the Internal Revenue Service are available. The images are available on CD or DVD and in Raw or Alchemy format depending on the type of return, the type of filer, and the year the return was filed. Image files for Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF filed in an individual state in a calendar year are available on a quarterly basis. Returns filed and imaged in a calendar year for Forms 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF and 990-T are available on a monthly basis.
Note: Images for individual states are only in Alchemy format. For 2006, the images are only available on CDs. For years 2007 forward, the images are only available on DVDs.
Raw Format: CDs/DVDs contain image files in Tag Image File (TIF) format for returns selected for the month or quarter requested. Related files are associated with each other through a comma-delimited index file. Each submission's index file contains eight index fields (EIN, tax period, taxpayer name, state, ZIP code, type of return, subsection code, and total assets). This is followed by a list of TIF files belonging to the return. This format is best for users who intend to process the image files through their own software.
Alchemy Format: CDs/DVDs contain image files associated in an Alchemy database to simplify visual searching of the tax returns. All required Alchemy software and installation instructions are provided. Once the software is installed, users can easily search the returns using any of the eight index fields identified above. This format is best for users who wish to examine returns visually.
We suggest you order a sample CD/DVD if you are uncertain which format will meet your needs. A sample CD/DVD is available upon request for $12 per format requested. The sample will contain a set of returns (for example, a group of Forms 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF and 990-T imaged files ) Note - A sample CD/DVD is available only for Forms 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF and 990-T. There are no refunds or exchanges on CD\DVD orders.
The tables linked below indicate what returns are available, formats, and the related charge. Images are available at no cost to members of the media or other government agencies. Please note that returns are maintained for seven years and then destroyed. As such, returns received and imaged in calendar years prior to 2007 are no longer available.
The following forms are not available on CD/DVD.
- Form 5227, Split-Interest Trust Information Return
- Specific individual organization
- Form 990-N (e-Postcard). Forms 990-N can be viewed individually or the entire data base can be downloaded from the IRS website.
